A humane guide to the purposes, choices and responsibilities surrounding Hindu life-cycle rites.
01
GUIDANCE AND ACTION
Understand their purpose
Samskaras mark transition, responsibility, belonging and remembrance. Lists vary across texts and communities. The most widely observed today include naming, first food, beginning education, marriage and end-of-life rites.
02
GUIDANCE AND ACTION
Plan without exclusion
Choose a competent officiant who explains fees, materials and meaning. Adapt for disability, adoption, inter-community families and people without extended family. Civil law, medical care and the wishes of the person take priority where applicable.
03
GUIDANCE AND ACTION
Make the rite ethically fruitful
A ceremony is incomplete if its values are not lived. Naming should affirm care, education rites should support learning, marriage should rest on free consent and equality, and ancestor rites should deepen gratitude rather than fear.
